Today i went to see Dr T my Endocrinologist at Thomas Linacre centre in Wigan.
He told me that he had looked at my initial blood test results and the prolactin levels were really high and that he suspected a pituitary tumour was behind the issue. Went on to say that he would arrange a further 6 sets of blood tests to cover other hormones too.
Then he compounded the bad news by saying that he also felt that i had “other symptoms” of Acromegaly (Acromegaly is a hormonal disorder that results from too much growth hormone (GH) in the body. The pituitary, a small gland in the brain, makes GH. In acromegaly, the pituitary produces excessive amounts of GH. Usually the excess GH comes from benign, or noncancerous, tumors on the pituitary. These benign tumors are called adenomas).
Ok so doesn’t sound too bad but i asked what these “other symptoms” were? The response was honest and meant with the best intentions but it was brutally matter of fact. He said my jaw, hands and feet were excessively abnormal and probably caused by excessive growth hormones in the body.
He focused on my jaw + bite. Now i should say that albeit i am a big lad (6ft7 20 stone) i have always felt that i was in proportion. Yes my bite has been out since i was about 18-20 but all the same i didn’t take this feedback well. Conscious of my size, i have always been really aware of it but never really seen myself as abnormal or a giant.
Rather oddly i could take the news of a possible tumour but the comments about my looks hit hard. Suppose this is really shallow but i took this quite badly and spent hours thinking it over.
Later that night my girlfriend cheered me up immensely and after going through loads of old photos it was clear that my looks haven’t really changed at all and that perhaps Dr T was just amazed at my size – him being a short midget
